The lodge is believed to have been a temporary shelter used during
food gathering expeditions by the Shoshone Tukadika Indians
living in the Absaroka Mountains. The lodge is shown as found,
not as it would have looked when being used. When in use, new
poles would be added, as in adding shingles to a roof, then
possibly covered with skins or woven mats to provide added
protection from the elements. When the food gathering was
completed, and the people moved on, the lodge would be left
standing until it was needed again, at which time it would be
refurbished as needed.
The term
Tukadika means "Mountain Sheep
Eater" in the Shoshone language. These people lived in the
mountains, unlike other segments of the Shoshoni, and indeed used
mountain sheep as the main part of their diet and survival
necessities.
